What is "Display-Off Downloads"?

With "Display-Off Downloads," Valve brings a practical feature to the Steam Deck: While the display is off, downloads continue to run in the background – and in power-saving mode. This saves energy, especially with large games or updates, and eliminates the need to wait in front of the lit screen.

How do I activate this feature?

• Enabled by default when the Steam Deck is plugged in. (You must first "upgrade" your Steam Deck version to the beta in the Beta/Preview Channel settings.)
• When running on battery power, you can turn on the feature under Settings > Power .
• While a download is in progress, press the power button. A dialog box will ask if you want to continue the download in screen-off mode. Select "Resume" – the screen will turn off, and the download will continue.
• The mode also starts automatically after a certain period of inactivity.

What happens in display-off mode?

• The Steam Deck remains in power-saving mode and continues downloading.
• Pressing a button or moving the device will display a status screen showing the download progress. You can then either fully wake the deck or let the download continue in screen-off mode.
• When running on battery power, the Steam Deck automatically goes into sleep mode when the battery level drops below 20% – clever battery management included.
• The feature is currently available in the beta and preview channels.
