Steam Points: Everything you need to know and how to use them for your Steam Deck

Yes, we spend a lot of money on games - and we like it! But we prefer to do it when we get more than just the game for it. Valve has developed its very own system for this: Steam Points.

How to get Steam Points

Every time we make a purchase on Steam, we receive Steam Points according to the amount spent. First, this amount is converted into US dollars, which is then directly converted into the number of points we have. Tip: If you buy your Steam Deck through your Steam account, you get a huge chunk of Steam Points!

We also receive Steam Points when a member of the Steam community likes one of your reviews or other content you upload, such as screenshots, guides, or workshop content. Please note: You do not receive points when you top up your Steam wallet or make purchases in the Steam Community Market.

What can you spend your Steam points on?

Getting Steam Points sounds nice at first - but what exactly can you do with them?

Profile Upgrades

The main focus is on cosmetic changes to your Steam profile. These include:

• Profile backgrounds
• Mini profile backgrounds
• Avatars
• Profile frame
• badge
• In-game profile backgrounds, emoticons and chat stickers

The variety of options allows you to make your profile stand out from others.

Chat and trading cards

If that's not for you, you can also spend Steam Points on chat emoticons and stickers, or buy trading cards for games you own to complete your Collector's Badge or to sell on the Community Marketplace.

Discounts

Occasionally, you can purchase Steam discounts on select games using your Steam Points.

Steam Points for your Steam Deck

This little summary is all well and good - but can you get something for the Steam Deck with Steam Points? Yes! In addition to the cosmetic options that you can purchase for your profile, there are also exciting startup animations that play on your Steam Deck every time you start it.

Here's how to do it:

1. Go to your Steam Deck’s settings.
2. Scroll down to 'Customization' .
3. There you will see many options that you can use for your Steam Deck.
4. Scroll all the way down and click on “Find more start animations -> Show points shop” .
5. Find a nice startup animation and select it.
6. Download it and mark it as a startup animation later.
7. Voilà!

Finally, it should be emphasized that you will not lose the Steam points you have earned if you do not spend them within a certain period of time. They will remain with you.
