Installing CurseForge on Steam Deck: How to manage your WoW addons

CurseForge auf dem Steam Deck installieren: So verwaltest du deine WoW-Addons - decky.net

Kevin Cookson |

If you've read our previous guide, you already know how brilliantly World of Warcraft runs on handhelds. But let's be honest: Vanilla WoW is cool, but the experience on the small screen only truly comes together with the right add-ons. Whether you want to customize your interface, need DBM for your next raid, or optimize your controller input with ConsolePort - you need a decent add-on manager.

This is where CurseForge comes in. Since the Steam Deck is based on SteamOS (a Linux distribution), the installation isn't quite as straightforward as on a Windows PC. But don't worry: With a few tweaks in desktop mode and the magic of Proton, you'll have CurseForge up and running in no time. In this post, I'll show you step by step how to install and configure CurseForge on the Steam Deck and avoid the most common pitfalls.

Why CurseForge on the Steam Deck?

CurseForge is the undisputed number one when it comes to WoW addons. The platform offers a huge library and keeps your mods up-to-date with a single click. On the Steam Deck, we use the Linux-friendly AppImage version for this. This has crucial advantages:

  • No Windows required: You don't need to set up a dual-boot system. CurseForge runs directly under SteamOS.
  • Easy updates: Instead of tediously unpacking addons manually into the WoW folder, the app does it for you.
  • Full compatibility: All well-known add-ons such as WeakAuras, ElvUI or Plater are available and work perfectly.

Preparations & Requirements

Before we begin, please ensure that World of Warcraft is already installed and running on your Steam Deck via Battle.net. If you haven't done this yet, please check out our detailed tutorial on how to do so first:

A quick tip: WoW, including its add-ons, takes up a lot of storage space (easily over 100 GB). If your internal storage is bursting at the seams, an upgrade is worthwhile. Whether you get a microSD card or even a new SSD is entirely up to you.

Step-by-step: Installing CurseForge

The installation requires a brief switch to desktop mode on your Steam Deck. It's best to use a docking station, Bluetooth mouse, and keyboard; this will make navigation much more comfortable.

1. Download CurseForge AppImage

First, switch to desktop mode (Steam button > Power > Switch to Desktop). Open your preferred browser (e.g., Firefox) and navigate to the official CurseForge website. Look for the Linux download. You need the standalone AppImage file. Download it; it will be saved to your "Downloads" folder by default.

2. Add as a non-Steam game

To make CurseForge easy to use and run with Proton, we integrate it into Steam:

  • Open Steam in desktop mode.
  • Click on "Add game" in the bottom left corner and select "Add non-Steam game" .
  • Click "Browse" and navigate to your Downloads folder. Important: Set the file filter at the bottom to "All Files" so that the AppImage file is displayed.
  • Select the CurseForge file and click on "Add Selected Programs" .

3. Configure Proton compatibility

This is the crucial step to ensure the app runs smoothly on SteamOS. Locate CurseForge in your Steam library, right-click on it, and select "Properties." Go to the "Compatibility" tab, check the box next to "Force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool," and select Proton Experimental from the dropdown menu.

Pro tip: Many community users report that Proton-GE (GloriousEggroll) runs even more stably. You can easily install Proton-GE via the "ProtonUp-Qt" app (found in the Discover Store) and then select it in Steam.

4. Start CurseForge and link WoW

Now launch CurseForge via Steam. The first time you launch it, you'll need to tell the app where your WoW installation is located:

  • In CurseForge, click the gear icon (settings) or the plus icon to manually add a game.
  • Navigate to your WoW folder. If you installed WoW on a microSD card, you'll usually find the path under /run/media/mmcblk0p1/ .
  • Select the main World of Warcraft folder. CurseForge will now scan the directories (Retail, Classic, etc.) and configure everything.

Now you can search for add-ons to your heart's content and download them with a single click on "Install". For the Steam Deck, we highly recommend ConsolePort (for controller support), Immersion (for more readable quest text), and Opie (for convenient radial menus).

Common Problems & Solutions

Sometimes the setup process under Linux can be a little tricky. Here are the most common problems and how to solve them quickly:

  • The AppImage file won't start: Make sure the file is executable. In your file manager (Dolphin), right-click the AppImage file > Properties > Permissions and check the box next to "Is executable". Also, check that you have indeed forced a Proton version in Steam.
  • CurseForge can't find the WoW folder: This often happens when the paths are hidden by Proton. Use the manual search in CurseForge and patiently click through the folder structure. Sometimes it also helps to run the "Scan and Repair" function in Battle.net so that the paths are re-registered.
  • Performance issues or lag: CurseForge running in the background can consume resources. Close the app after updating your addons before launching WoW. Also, make sure your SteamOS is up to date.

Conclusion: Your WoW setup is now complete

With CurseForge on the Steam Deck, you have full control over your interface and add-ons, just like on your home PC. It requires a few minutes of initial setup in desktop mode, but the effort is well worth it. Once everything is configured, a quick check before playing is all it takes to keep all your mods up to date.
