Installing AirTag in Steam Deck

AirTag im Steam Deck einbauen - decky.net

Have you ever wondered if you can install an AirTag into your Steam Deck LCD/OLED? Good news - it's actually possible! In this post, we'll show you step by step how to integrate your AirTag into the case of your Steam Deck.

What you need

Before we get started, here are the tools you will need for installation:

  • Torx T6 screwdriver (not to be confused with TR6)
  • Plastic wedge to open the case (or something similar like a plectrum or an old credit card)
  • Apple AirTag (Note: If the AirTag is not brand new, install a new battery first.)

Instructions: Install AirTag on Steam Deck

  1. remove the back
To open the back of the Steam Deck, remove a total of eight screws: four at the corners and four in the middle. Use the T6 screwdriver to do this. Make sure there is no SD card in the slot before you start opening the case. Make sure the screws are different lengths.

  2. pry open the housing
Using a plastic wedge, carefully pry open the housing. Guide the tool around the housing until it comes off. Don't worry, the housing may offer some resistance, but be patient and don't be too rough.

  3. Insert AirTag
Now comes the exciting part: There are various places in the Steam Deck to hide the AirTag. For example, in one of the handles or next to the L4-L5 buttons.
The space between the L4 and L5 buttons offers a little more room, so this is recommended if you don't use the back buttons much. (The mod has a small impact on the use of the back buttons. Otherwise, just clip it into the handle.) Once you've placed the AirTag, put the case back in.

  4. Do the keys still fit?
After the case is closed, check that the buttons work well. The AirTag may tighten up the L5 button a bit, but it should still be responsive. If you rarely use the rear pedals, this shouldn't be a big problem.

  5. Test: AirTag works
Once everything is back in place, test the AirTag. If you hear the beep, you know everything is working. (There are also people who take the speaker out of the AirTag, but we haven't tried that yet.)

Conclusion
That's it! This is how you get your AirTag installed in the Steam Deck. It does affect the rear buttons slightly, but that's bearable if you don't use the pedals often. Otherwise, you can store your AirTag in the handle. Have fun trying it out - and don't forget to track your Steam Deck while you're on the go!
