Steam Deck BIOS Manager: Instructions, Features & Security for your handheld

Steam Deck BIOS Manager: Anleitung, Features & Sicherheit für dein Handheld

What is the Steam Deck BIOS Manager?

The Steam Deck BIOS Manager is a handy shell script that greatly simplifies many BIOS-related tasks on the Steam Deck.

It was created by GitHub user ryanrudolfoba
You can find the download on GitHub - click here.

Instead of cryptic terminal commands, SteamOS lets you back up, flash, lock, or unlock your BIOS with a clear menu navigation - all with just a few clicks. Perfect for anyone who wants to customize their Steam Deck or experiment with custom firmware.

Functions and Features

  • Backup: Quickly create a backup of your current BIOS - in case something goes wrong, you're on the safe side.
  • Block/Unblock BIOS Updates: Prevent automatic BIOS updates by SteamOS or re-enable them if you wish.
  • Unlock: Unblock hidden menus (e.g. AMD PBS/CBS) and enable the use of tools like Smokeless.
  • Download & Flash: Download signed BIOS files directly from a verified source and flash them safely to your device.
  • Crisis Mode: Prepare a USB stick for restoring your BIOS in case of emergency - especially useful in case of faulty flashing processes.
  • Compatibility: Supports both the Steam Deck LCD and the OLED models - including custom BIOS for DeckHD and DeckSight OLED panels.

Instructions for use

  1. Switch to desktop mode in your Steam Deck and open the terminal (console).
  2. Clone the GitHub repository:
    git clone https://github.com/ryanrudolfoba/SteamDeck-BIOS-Manager.git
  3. Change to the directory and make the script executable:
    cd ~/SteamDeck-BIOS-Manager
    chmod +x steamdeck-BIOS-manager.sh
  4. Start the script:
    ./steamdeck-BIOS-manager.sh
  5. Follow the menu instructions. The script checks if a sudo password is set and guides you through the desired functions.

Important: Certain functions require administrator rights (sudo password). If you haven't set one yet, you will be prompted to do so.

Important Information & Safety

  • Backup first! Always create a BIOS backup before flashing or unlocking - the script offers a dedicated option for this.
  • Use CRISIS Mode with caution: The USB stick will be completely formatted! Do not use a stick containing important data and ensure that no other USB storage device is connected.
  • DeckHD & Custom BIOS: The script also supports flashing custom BIOS, e.g., for DeckHD or larger RAM modules. Always check the compatibility and source of the BIOS files.
  • No BIOS files included: The script automatically downloads verified, signed BIOS files - you don't need to worry about downloads yourself.
  • At your own risk: Modifications to the BIOS are always at your own risk. An incorrect flash can render your device unusable (keyword: "brick").
